Emergency Planning Tips

Having an emergency plan for your family could be the difference between life and death.

That planning all starts with a battery powered radio, for national weather service alerts or your smart phone.

There are 35 tornado sirens around Houston County but those are designed to alert people outside to get indoors and seek shelter.

You may not hear sirens in your home or if you're sleeping, that's why it's important to have another alert system set up.

If a tornado warning is issued you should take shelter in a sound structure, in the center of the house if possible.

"Always have your weather radio handy and turned on when severe weather is in the area, make sure you have flashlights, a first aid kit in your home so you're able to take care of yourself for those first few hours until we can get responders to you should we have access problems,” Battalion Chief Chris Etheredge with the Dothan Fire Department said.
