Dothan's First Female Firefighter Retires

DOTHAN, AL--Dothan's first female firefighter is hanging up her hose.

Friday the fire department held a retirement ceremony for Vickey Bristow.

She joined the team in 1993, fighting fires, driving and pumping the truck and delivering first aid.

Bristow says she became a firefighter because she loves and cares for people.

"When i first came in it was kind of scary and I think they were more scared of me than I were them so we kind of worked it out and they saw I didn't bite and they didn't bite and it turned out to be very well," said Bristow.

Bristow says she'll miss the camaraderie among her fellow firefighters.

The department now has 169 firefighters.

Three are women.
