DOTHAN, AL -On May 17, 2003, a murder occurred at the Bee Line Motel, located at 733 N. Oates Street in Dothan. The victim, Debra Hopey Wilson (W/F), was found in room deceased from apparent blunt force trauma to the head. The case was investigated but no suspects were charged. This cold case murder has remained unsolved until now.
For the past ten years the case has been reviewed multiple times by investigators but no charges were filed in the case. Recently members of the Dothan Police Department's Cold Case Unit reviewed the case again. Evidence was submitted to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science for DNA testing. As a result, new DNA evidence was obtained in the case. Interviews were then conducted in other cities and states across the country. Investigators obtained sufficient evidence to present the case to a grand jury. The case was presented to a Houston County grand jury panel during the month of August, 2013.
On or about December 2, 2013, investigators received notification that an indictment was passed down and that Douglas Tyrone Armstrong (B/M) was indicted for the murder of Debra Wilson. Douglas Armstrong is currently incarcerated in the State of Texas and will face extradition to the State of Alabama.
The Dothan Police Department would like to thank all the agencies that assisted in this investigation. Because of the great work by the investigators who initially investigated that case and the effort of the current investigators involved, this case has now been brought to a close. The investigators of the Dothan Police Department hope the indictment in this case will bring closure to the family of Debra Wilson.
