A new company says it's getting ready to mine asteroids in space!
Deep Space Industries says it aims to begin sending unmanned "scout probes" to asteroids as soon as 2015.
Larger spacecraft capable of bringing back 50 to 100 pound samples from prospective targets could be blasting off by 2016.
The company wants to travel about 31 million miles into space to mine asteroids for metals, water and other compounds that could be used to manufacture fuel to power spacecraft.
Tuesday's announcement comes nine months after the unveiling of a similar project by Planetary Resources.
It hopes to get its first unmanned probes into space by the end of 2013.
