UPDATE: Woman Arrested in Infant Death

UPDATE: March 1, 2014

Deputies arrested a Fort Walton Beach woman in connection to the death of her newborn daughter.

Investigators say 29-year-old Tonisha Crowell delivered a seven pound baby girl late last week. They tell us they found the baby in a garbage bag near Crowell's home. The infant was still breathing.

Deputies tried to save her life but were ultimately no able. Investigators say the newborn had been exposed to cold temperatures for hours and also suffered blood loss.

Crowell told investigators she had hidden the the pregnancy from her fiance and that she thought the child was dead at birth. -------------------------------------------------------------
FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities in the Florida Panhandle are investigating the death of a newborn found in a garbage bag.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office says a woman who was 38 weeks pregnant was treated earlier this week at the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

She was no longer pregnant when she returned Wednesday, but there was no record of a birth.

The Northwest Florida Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/1bRyXQv ) that a doctor contacted deputies, who began searching the woman's Fort Walton Beach home and surrounding areas.

The sheriff's office says a baby girl was found in a garbage bag in a ditch near the woman's home.

Autopsy results are pending.

Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Michele Nicholson says no charges have been filed.
