UPDATE: Covington Co. Authorities Investigate Fatal Shooting

In an update on the shooting on Palmer Lane in Red Level, Sheriff Dennis Meeks advised that Covington County Sheriff’s Office Investigators determined that it was a “Domestic Situation”. Gerald Palmer was shot numerous times by Catherine Symnowski, who then fatally shot herself.


Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks stated that at approximately 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, deputies were dispatched to an address on Palmer Lane, which is located off of Co. Rd 21 south of Red Level to a subject that stated that he had been shot.

Upon arrival deputies secured the scene and located two individuals lying just inside the front door. The individuals were both suffering from gunshot wounds.

Medics from Advanced EMS arrived on scene and determined that the female was deceased. Sheriff Meeks also advised that the male was suffering from numerous gunshots from what appeared to be a small caliber handgun and was transported to Andalusia Regional Hospital.

The victims are identified as Gerald Palmer, 68-year-old white male of Palmer Lane, Red Level and Catherine M. Symanowsk, 54-year-old white female from Padgett Road in Andalusia.

Investigators are still trying to determine the reason for the shooting. Sheriff Meeks advised that this case is still under investigation.
