China: Severe Ice and Snow Storms

A total of 52 vehicles became stranded on the provincial highway 224 in Chengde of north china's Hebei province on Sunday after the road surface was covered with ice and snow.

The ice and snow have since been cleared away, while traffic on the affected section resumed on Tuesday when weather conditions improved.

As the heavy snow in Chengde lowered visibility to ten meters on Sunday, more than 100 drivers and passengers in 52 vehicles found themselves unable to proceed by Tuesday afternoon.

"It rained at first, and then it froze into ice and it began to snow. The snowplow could only clear away the snow on the surface, but not the ice," said one of the trapped drivers.

Local traffic and police departments dispatched personnel to assist the trapped drivers and passengers. Necessities such as water, food and quilts were delivered to the stranded victims.

More than 100 workers and eight snowplows worked together to clear away the snow and ice.

At 18:00 on Tuesday, traffic on the 12-kilometer affected road section resumed.
