SEAL BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Oceanfront homes in Seal Beach, California, have avoided another drenching from huge surf spawned by Tropical Storm Marie in the Pacific Ocean off Mexico.

High tide came and went late Wednesday morning but a hastily-built 6-foot-tall sand berm and pumps kept seawater from returning to the low-lying community south of Los Angeles.

A surge during high tide late Tuesday sent water into homes and garages on a four-block stretch of Seal Beach.

The huge surf that has also damaged piers is expected to continue to pound beaches through Thursday even though the now-Tropical Storm is weakening.
