MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- Republican Bradley Byrne has won the special election in the 1st Congressional District in southwest Alabama.

Byrne led the race in fundraising, with $1.1 million compared to Leflore's nearly $7,000. Byrne also led in endorsements, including support from former U.S. Reps. Jo Bonner and Jack Edwards, both of Mobile. Bonner's resignation in August set up the unusual special election during the holiday season.

Byrne sought the office after finishing second in the Republican runoff for governor in 2010. Byrne says he's headed to Washington on Wednesday to get prepared.

The 1st District covers all of Mobile, Baldwin, Washington, Escambia and Monroe counties and part of Clarke County.
