A new documentary released Saturday, January 19th takes a look at the worldwide explosion of a unique fandom: adult fans of the latest incarnation of the animated series, “My Little Pony.”
“Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony,” a feature-length documentary, examines the stories behind the Bronies (bro + pony), adult fans of “My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic,” an animated series that debuted in 2010 on The Hub cable network.
Through footage recorded at some of the many conventions celebrating the series across the world and stories of individual fans, the documentary explains the love and loyalty that some adults have for an animated series primarily targeted to young girls.
“Bronies” was produced by Michael Brockoff and three members of the cast and crew of the show: Lauren Faust (series creator), John de Lancie (guest voice actor) and Tara Strong (voice actor).
Funds for the film were raised through the internet fundraising site, Kickstarter. Several times during the fundraising process, the target goal was met and surpassed, allowing the scope of the documentary to expand. It became the 5th most successful “film & video” project on the site with over 320 thousand dollars raised.
Currently, the film is only available through digital distribution channels.
