Beat the Summer Heat

(Dothan, AL)—The summer sun is out and that means special precautions should be made before heading outside.

“People don’t stay hydrated and ignore the warning signs, “Dothan Fire Department Battalion Chief Chris Etheredge said. “The majority of calls we respond to are those situations where people don’t drink enough fluids and end up having a major medical emergency like a heat stroke,” he said.

During the summer months, skincare should be another top priority. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, more than two million people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year, and most cases are preventable.

“Everyone should always lather on the sunscreen,”Etheredge said. “We do see people with severe sunburns and it’s something that can easily be taken care of with some SPF 50,” he said.

Etheredge also recommends those who plan on taking a dip into the water to swim cautiously.
