MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A state Senate committee has approved legislation designed to give city and county school systems more flexibility in dealing with state education laws.
The Senate Education Committee voted 9-0 for the bill Tuesday after adding amendments to protect the tenure rights of teachers and to make sure the legislation can't be used to create charter schools. The state teachers' organization, the Alabama Education Association, sought the amendment to protect tenure rights, and it passed 5-4.
The bill would allow school systems to apply for an exemption from many state education laws. The exemptions would be approved by the State Board of Education.
The bill now goes to the Senate. Senate President Pro Tem Del Marsh said he will give senators time to study the bill before seeking a vote.
