Up to three hundred Army Fleet Support workers could be laid off by Christmas.

A letter posted on a local union’s web site says the first layoffs could happen as early as next week.

According to Local Lodge 2003 of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers’ website, L-3/AFS company representatives contacted the organization’s grievance negotiation committee yesterday.

They said the army will be cutting about 49,000 flying hours from the original 250,000 planned this year at Fort Rucker.

Layoff are expected to take place in increments.

It’s unclear which positions are being targeted for cuts.

This would be the third time this year Army Fleet Support has laid off employees.
