PANAMA CITY, Fla. (AP) - Gov. Charlie Crist has appointed a new sheriff in Gulf County.
That fills a position that became vacant after the former sheriff became the target of a law enforcement investigation and resigned.
Joseph Nugent was appointed to the position yesterday. The 51-year-old had been appointed interim sheriff after Dalton Upchurch resigned July 11th. Upchurch was accused of concealing records of a motorist's arrest to prevent the man's prosecution and indicted by a grand jury.
Nugent says his first major task as sheriff will be guiding the department through a nearly $250,000 budget cut.
