Drought-stricken Areas Shrinks

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - There's good news from the U.S. Drought Monitor.

The latest survey, released Thursday, shows that only 61 percent of the state is under the worst exception drought conditions, mainly in the north and eastern portions of the state.

And, for the first time in months, about 1 percent of the state - the southern most tip is not under any drought conditions. The rest of Alabama remains under some degree of drought.

The exceptional drought area is expanding north to the northern Tennessee line and still is gripping extreme eastern areas in North and South Carolina and northern Georgia.

Drought conditions are expected to persist in the current exceptional drought areas through November.
