Four Bay County Residents May Face Charges for Black Bear Meat

FOUNTAIN, Fla. (AP) - Four Panhandle residents may face charges for allegedly serving black bear meat at a barbecue last year.

The State Attorneys Office is pursuing charges against Bay County residents Michele Modawell, John Modawell Junior and Charles French. The fourth person, a juvenile, is charged in the next county with illegally taking a protected species.

Authorities say wildlife officials began investigating the four after receiving a tip that a barbecued black bear was served at a holiday party in Fountain, about 26 miles from Panama City.

The state attorney's office says meat was confiscated from a freezer at one house and wildlife officials have taken two bear hams and a shotgun from an unspecified location.
