Coffee County Fire Fee Denied

Earlier this month, Coffee County commission denied a request to put a fire fee before voters.

Monday, several firefighters along with emergency rescue personnel came before the board to show their support for the levy.

Under its terms, each homeowner and business would pay a flat $30 a year.

The funds in turn would be used in various volunteer departments and rescue squads.

The county commission agreed to table the matter.

Several Wiregrass counties including Houston and Dale impose a fire fee.

To all citizens who are protected by volunteers: Some volunteer fire and ems services in Alabama are on the verge of folding because of the lack of funding. Here in Geneva County our Commissioners only give 400.00 a year to the four ambulance services. What a joke. Anyone want to guess what the cost is to purchase a new ambulance or a Cardiac Monitor? I think $30.00 a year is a cheap price to pay for having a paramedic or firefighter be ready available to assist you in your time of need.

dear sir and madam, i am really angry with the four county commissioners who voted no. how dare you take away my right as a citizen to vote on such an important matter as this. you don;t have to beg for money when it comes to lining your wallets with tax increases when it benefits you. but let me tell you something, i see first hand what these guys do. they leave their families when ignorant people like you call 911 for help. they raise what money they can. my husband is joseph mccollough and i am very proud of him and the whole fivestar volunteer fire dept. they earn their donationsand people like you don't see this. get your blinders off. you have not heard the last of this this is a better cause than any senior citizen building. how many of you profitted from land sell or how many of you could not wait to spend increased tax dollars for this cause. hats of to firefighters and emergency crews that stand for something. robert stephens stands for ignorance, not helping fellow man.
