Elba Faces Police Shortage

Elba Police department is experiencing a shortage of qualified job applicants.

However, Elba Police Chief Freddy Hanchey says that is not unusual.

Chief Hanchey says nationwide there are fewer young people pursuing a career in criminal justice.

One big issue is salary.

Elba pays its starting officers just over $10 an hour.

Often, these men and women can go to a larger department for more money.

Chief Hanchey is lobbying the city council to increase the hourly rate for starting officers and veteran policemen.
