A recent report indicates that area veterans have a profound impact on the Wiregrass' economy.
Vietnam veteran Max Roberts says in Coffee County alone more than 22-million federal dollars was pumped into the area through compensation, education and medical care.
Roberts told the Coffee County Commission that there are a little less than 6,000 veterans living in the county.
The majority are from the Vietnam era.
Roberts hopes the county will take their backgrounds into consideration when hiring.
“We are asking that the county follow the labor department recommendations in regard to preferential treatment in regard to veterans. We are not asking for anything unusual, not trying to reinvent the wheel," says Roberts.
Roberts main message to the county commission is that veterans are an important component to the fabric of any community especially in Southeast Alabama.
