Bush Signs Bill

President Bush signs the defense spending bill at the White House Thursday, then heads to another round of campaign travel in the Rust Belt.

The $417 billion Pentagon spending measure was approved by lopsided margins last month as lawmakers headed for their summer recess. It includes $25 billion for continuing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

After the White House signing ceremony, the president flies to Columbus, Ohio, for a town meeting. Later, he's got a rally in Saginaw, Michigan. In both states, it's Bush's second visit in as many weeks.

The most recent polls give him a narrow lead over John Kerry in Ohio, while he trails narrowly in Michigan.

At the Ohio event, aides say Bush will again voice support for letting workers who log more than 40 hours in a week take time off later. Unions say that's an opening for employers to avoid paying premium overtime in cash.
