DOT official: Bridge funding insufficient

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - In the wake of the Minneapolis bridge collapse, some are wondering if there are other bridges across the
country that are structurally unsound.

Fred Conway with the Alabama Department of Transportation says there isn't enough money spent on bridges nationwide to maintain them properly and about 25 percent of them are structurally or design deficient.

Conway say structurally deficient does NOT mean they are ready to collapse.

He said a span could be too small or minus needed shoulders. Conway said they are either inspected more regularly or are posted to restrict heavier traffic.
