MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The governor's office has spent more
than $500,000 on legal bills for its crackdown on illegal gambling.
The Montgomery Advertiser reports Sunday that figures supplied
by Gov. Bob Riley's administration show it has paid the Bradley
Arant Boult Cummings law firm $536,115 to assist the Governor's
Task Force on Illegal Gambling.
The administration's contract with the law firm allows the state
to pay up to $650,000.
Task force Commander John Tyson testified Friday in a court
hearing he receives no compensation as commander.
Riley's press secretary, Todd Stacy, said the legal costs are
less than half of the $1.3 million the task force has seized in
raids on gambling halls. Court hearings will determine whether the
state government keeps the entire amount.
