Newton Mayor Mike Byrd is stepping down. His resignation will become effective August 1.
The town council picked their current street department supervisor Derek White to be interim mayor in Byrd’s place.
White is already candidate for mayor in the August 24 municipal election.
According to state law, he will have to go on unpaid leave from his street department position August 2 until the election is over.
Mayor Byrd says he will help with the transition when the new council and mayor take office October 1.
