Voters in one Northwest Florida County will be asked to pass a tourist tax this November.
Under the proposal, a two-percent levy will be added to the price of a hotel or motel room, or a space in an RV park. Supporters say the amount paid by a visitor will be about one dollar a night.
Holmes County is one of just a few counties in Florida without a tourist, or more commonly referred to as a "bed tax".
In neighboring Washington County, it’s raised nearly $50,000 in the last five years.
Holmes County Chamber of Commerce Director Jyl Eickmann, says the proceeds raised would go back into the community.
It will be earmarked for promoting local events like the Annual Northwest Florida Rodeo held in Bonifay.
Mrs. Eickmann stresses that such a levy will not have any effect on local taxpayers.
