PHENIX CITY, Ala. (AP) - Russell County has suspended its jail
expansion plans after Phenix City officials declined to participate
in the project.

Russell County Commissioner Gentry Lee says the city council sent a letter to the county saying that because the citys portion of the jail holds 68 inmates, and the city averages 38 inmates a day, the city had no need for the expansion.

The city and county share the jail and split the costs, with the city paying one-third of the operating costs and the county paying the remainder.

Sheriff Tommy Boswell presented a proposal for the expansion earlier this year because he believes the county is in danger of violating the court order that forced them to build the new jail in 1989.
