ATLANTA (AP) - A Republican-backed proposal opposing President
Barack Obama's push for health care overhaul has been narrowly
defeated in the Senate.
Senate Resolution 794 mirrors similar bills in nearly 40 states. Sen. Judson Hill, the a sponsor of the bill, says it would have preserved citizens' freedom to choose their own health care.
Because the proposal called for a constitutional amendment, it needed two-thirds support from the Legislature, or 38 votes. The measure failed to reach that, with a vote of 34-19 that broke along party lines.
Still, the issue may soon be revived as Senate Bill 317 - which would not require a super majority vote - could be headed to the Senate floor.
