Losing all of its state funding for the upcoming season hasn't prevented the Alabama Shakespeare Festival from reaching out to new audiences.
The theater is embarking on a $1.2 million campaign targeting people who live within 300 miles of its Montgomery home, as well as an unprecedented national tour of military bases and a renovation plan, all that after losing all $800,000 of its state funding over the last four years.
ASF's two-month tour of the nation's military bases is part of the National Endowment for the Arts' Shakespeare in American Communities initiative. The 12-state, 14-base tour begins at Maxwell Air Force Base in September and concludes with a five-day stop at Birmingham's Virginia Samford Theatre the last week of October.
