Fun Zone opened its doors in Dothan Saturday, eight months after the Montgomery business was destroyed by a tornado.
November 15, Fun Zone in Montgomery owners Rocky and Lisa McIlwain were on their way to Atlanta when they heard the news. A search was held after the twister struck to find the 31-children and 11-staff members trapped beneath the debris.
"Our office manager called and said it was gone, nothing left, we were shocked," said Rocky.
The McIlwain first thoughts were not about the business they had worked for years to build up, but instead about the people left inside.
"We asked what about the kids and we drove back. When we crossed the Alabama line all of the kids were accounted for," said Lisa.
Eight months have passed since the tornado and already the McIlwain have made a come back. Saturday a grand opening celebration was held to mark the first day of business for Fun Zone in Dothan and the family is proud to once again be serving the community.
"It's a big deal, some family kids work here and it’s nice to carry on the fun zone tradition,” said Rocky.
Fun Zone replaced what used to be the playground and the newly remodeled facility has more games and activities for people of all ages.
First day of business, Fun Zone held three birthday parties Rocky and Lisa hope the high turnout means they chose they right place to open up their new business.
