Cost of Living in Dothan

Next time you go to the grocery store and look at the price of milk and say ‘Man, why does it cost so much ?' It’s not that bad because Honolulu, Hawaii has the most expensive milk in the entire nation!

Meanwhile, Dothan ranks as the 10 cheapest city in the U.S. because of its cheap low cost goods.

Mayor Pat Thomas said, "You can bring your bankroll with you from wherever you've worked all those years. Come to Dothan, AL. It'll cost you 14 % less to live than most places in the United States."

The criteria are based on more than 50,000 prices covering almost 60 different items bought by consumers. And, the fact that more business is coming to the area, i.e. the Dothan Pavilion, developers are amazed Dothan ranks so low.

Forrest Register with Register Commercial Development said, "What is surprising is Dothan stays in the tier. Because it seems like a lot of communities, the more benefits and services they have, they fall out of the cost of living.”

Developers say the average cost of a home in Dothan is half the price of a home in Panama City, Florida.

Developer Hugh Wheelless has tapped into the phenomenon and is building new houses, at affordable prices in the high-end part of town. "We've built a project called, Honeysuckle Cove by Honeysuckle Middle School. Being in the low 119's, 120's seems to be a market that's very affordable." says Wheelless.

Most of the residents moving to the area are retired.
And Mayor Thomas says one of the larger challenges leaders face right now, is keeping young professionals. He says the city is working on that.

Meanwhile, healthcare in the area is 20-percent below the national average, while housing rates are 29-percent lower.

It is easy to say that the cost of living in Dothan is lower especially when you are talking about people from elsewhere moving here. These people have lived where they were paid more, then find out that they can live more affordably here. The majority of people here are trying to live off of minimum wage. Gone are the factory jobs that had good pay and health benefits. (thank you bill cilton) Now these people who are not trianed for anything else are having to take minimum wage jobs at fast food resturants and retail stores. jobs that use to be for teenagers in high school and college now are the jobs that are supporting families of three or more.

First I'd really like to know, just how you figure the population of Dothan. To claim that many people you must be including smaller towns around the city. Also I've noticied you are comparing a small (dothan) overpriced city to actual large cities. Of course you can make the cost of living look lower. Yet if you took the actual population around 24,000 and used that info you would see dothan has an unreasonably high cost of living.

Your numbers look good on paper , but that's where it all stops .. You compare milk prices here with the prices in Hawaii , where 99% of everything is imported ! And you compare home cost with that of a nationally known resort city like Panama city . And healthcare , the average visit to a doctor in Dothan is about what the average person earns in a day and a half !! Come on , give me a break here .. How stupid do you really think the people of Dothan are ? The only reason that the cost of living is lower in Dothan is because the pay scale is even lower and that's the very reason you can't keep the youth of Dothan from moving away . P.S. I understand your reasoning for not posting E-mail replies , the average person that has a computer and knows how to use it , is also smart enough to give a intelligent reply .

When you look at cost of living in other areas you also need to look at salaries here and in other areas also....
