Freeport Traffic Concerns

A new state requirement could hurt future development in one area town.

A traffic study will soon be held along Highway 331 which stretches from the Alabama state line to the Gulf coast.

If engineers say traffic load is too much, developers must pay to build new roads and bridges.

Freeport has been listed as one of the fastest growing cities' in the country.

Mayor Mickey Marse says new requirement could force some developers to eliminate their future plans.

“I think it was, the legislation was designed to help D.O.T. but not to fund the whole project…if development comes about I think it really will affect development for the entire state of Florida," said Mayor Marse.

The mayor says the rapid growth along the south-end of Walton County has tripled the traffic count on Highway 331.
