Houston County Sheriff Lamar Glover says the idea of having inmates responsible for medical co-pays is the best money saving project ever. He says the co-pay system has saved him more than $150,000 in the last year. He also recommends this system to other counties.
The Alabama Legislature allowed the jail to have a commissary fund so when inmates get sick their co-pay is deducted from their commissary money.
Coffee County officials are also looking into the possibility of getting inmates to pay for their own medical care.
