A spokeswoman for Archbishop Desmond Tutu said he did not cancel his trip to Alabama yesterday because of a personal emergency, as claimed by the organizer, the Reverend James Webb of Montgomery.
In an interview from Capetown, South Africa, Lavina Crawford-Browne, confirmed Tutu is returning to South Africa, but said there was no family or personal emergency. Crawford would not discuss the circumstances of the archbishop's decision not to attend the event. But she told a South African newspaper that logistical problems, including an unpaid hotel accommodation, led to the cancellation.
The two functions, held yesterday and last night at the Montgomery Civic Center, raised money to buy two-thousand pairs of shoes for poor school children in Montgomery and in South Africa.
