Arsonist Sought in Mobile for Torching Occupied Home

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Mobile Fire-Rescue investigators are looking for an arsonist who set a home on fire where seven children and two women were sleeping.

It happened around one o'clock Thursday morning at a residence on Chatham Street, near the downtown area.

Investigators said the suspect set fire to the porch, which quickly spread. One of the women, Patrice Minter, told authorities she heard noises outside her bedroom window, saw the flames and then attempted to put it out. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in minutes.

The children were safely evacuated.

Authorities said whoever is responsible will be charged with first-degree arson - a Class A felony.

The Red Cross assisted in finding the family temporary shelter in a motel.
