A former employee of Alabama's child welfare agency was sentenced to three years in prison Thursday after she was convicted of child abuse for leaving her eight-year-old son bound with duct tape while she went to work. 34-year-old Brenda Kennedy was convicted in March.
Prosecutors sought a life prison sentence for Kennedy as a habitual offender because she already had eight theft-related felony convictions.
Testimony showed Kennedy left her son Carl Anthony Horace at home on three separate days in June of last year and tied his ankles and wrists with duct tape.
Police found the boy naked and hungry. He managed to call police when his mother was at a part-time job.
A DHR official previously said the situation could have been avoided if Kennedy had told someone that she needed help.
