Farmers' Loans Available for Houston and Barbour Counties

Farmers across the Wiregrass are thankful for Tuesday's rain, but earlier this year freezing temperatures caused serious problems for crops.

Currently disaster loans are available for Houston and Barbour County farmers.

Crops such as peaches, wheat, and corn were damaged by the below freezing temperatures from the 6th to the 8th of April.

The Small Business Administration is allowing those farmers whose crops were affected by the freeze to apply for low-interest loans up until January 18, 2008.

These loans can be as high as one and a half million dollars, with interest rates about 4 percent for up to 30 years.

Figures show Alabama farmers sustained at least 60 million dollars in losses due to the freeze.
