Police Probe Two Suicides in Single Day in Covington County

ANDALUSIA, Ala. (AP) - A Florala man and an Opp couple are dead from gunshots in separate incidents.

Police in Florala said 66-year-old Thomas Jones was pronounced dead at his home at 8 am Thursday after he was found with a single gunshot wound to the head.

Police were initially handling his death as a possible murder case, but Police Captain Mark Anderson said a preliminary autopsy report from the state ruled Jones death a suicide.

Anderson said the circumstances surrounding Jones' death appeared to be suspicious, prompting police to contact the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

On the east side of the county, police in Opp said a couple was found dead - in an apparent murder-suicide.

Assistant Police Chief Mike McDonald said officers found the bodies of 62-year-old David Edgar and 71-year-old Helen Edgar late Thursday night at about 10-30 in their apartment after a resident asked authorities to check on them.

Investigators have not determined a motive.
