8 Month Old Baby Weighs Over 40 Pounds

An 8-month-old baby boy made headlines in Colombia on Tuesday after weighing in at over 44 pounds, three times heavier than an average child of that age.

Tipping the scales at 46.3 pounds, the tubby tot, Santiago, has been put on a strict diet by doctors to get his weight down to around 17 pounds.

"Three normal sized Santiago's would fit in him, because he weighs 46.3 pounds for an 8-month-old baby and he should be weighing roughly 17 or 15 pounds," explained obesity specialist Cesar Guevara.

Santiago will be taken off formula milk and fed vegetables and juices as part of the diet.

Santiago's mother, Eunice Fandiño, sought the help of a charity that tackles obesity in Colombia after she noticed the baby had problems moving about due to his weight.

"I'm worried about his (Santiago's) obesity, I don't want him to continue like this," she said.

According to a foundation there is no medical reason for Santiago's weight gain, he has just been overfed.

Santiago lives with his four siblings and mother in Codazzi, around 342 miles north of Bogota but has been brought to the capital for medical evaluations this week.
