Dothan Businessman Dead In Plane Crash

A plane crash near the Florida coast claimed the life of a Dothan businessman Thursday morning.

The pilot, Dan Smith, was the only person on board.

Smith was the long-time owner of Dothan Motor Company.

Officials say the plane went down in the Highland view canal near Port Saint Joe around 9 am.

Witnesses told authorities the pilot was flying low and may have been waving at someone on the ground when the air-craft clipped a power line and crashed into the water.

At last report, funeral arrangements had not been finalized and will be announced later.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.

Dan Smith was a devout Christian, devoted husband and father, a true friend to all mankind and a dear family friend of the Sawyer-Shaughnessey family in Dothan. There is not one iota of doubt--not one-- that he is with our Lord Jesus Christ whom he dutifully loved and served. Surely, he will hear or is hearing even now from our Savior "Well done, my good and faithful servant." To Dan, I say, "fly, fly high, my brother in the Lord, soar, soar above the clouds of this earth high, high, high into the Emerald skies of heaven, landing safely on those Pristine Shores of Paradise. One day, we, too, who love and serve the Lord, will make our individual flights and will soar those same skies, reaching that same Divine Destination, landing safely on those same Sacred Shores. We are praying for his church family--the John D Reese Fellowship in Dothan, all of whom will soon be saying farewell and celebrating the life of this fine, ever faithful man at a special Christian service this coming week in Dothan. May God bless and bring peace and comfort to the family and friends of Dan Smith. He touched many lives for the Lord. He was greatly appreciated. He will be greatly missed. Dan Smith was a wonderful man with a passion for almost everything he did. He had an uncanny ability to make strangers feel like long time friends. What a rare quality in this day and age. May God's peace rest upon his family as they deal with this awful tragedy.

I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to Mr Dan Smith a few times when I flew my plane into Slocomb where he kept his aircraft. Dan was very caring soul with a passion for aviation and loved to share a free plane ride with anyone who asked. He was a great man and will be missed in the aviation community. My prayers go out to his family. He died doing what he loved to share with others.
