It may surprise you to find out that blueberries and satsuma oranges are being produced and sold at exponential rates right here in the Wiregrass.
Farming in the Wiregrass has always been big business, but now two new fruits are cropping up as hot sellers.
Alabama Congressman Bobby Bright said, “SE AL is not only known for cottons and peanuts and corn, it's now fast becoming known for these products today, blueberries and satsumas."
The blueberry and satsuma business is expanding so quickly, that farmers are now in desperate need of a facility to mass produce the fruits.
Wiregrass Blueberry Producer Chuck McCall said, “That's the key to being able to market them to the rest of the US and if we can get it together we can market it."
Congressman Bright added, “They have to have the funds and resources to build a facility; they referred to it as a holding facility and we are going to make that happen."
Federal, state, and local officials are trying to pool their resources to give these farmers a way to continue expanding their business.
Wiregrass Satsuma Producer Dallas Hartzog said, "They are going to help us create a facility on 431 in Headland to help us process these satsumas and blueberries."
Farmers are hoping grant money will be made available to them to allow for the construction of a 5000 square foot warehouse.
Blueberry and satsuma producers would like to see a production facility built and in operation sometime next year.
