TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a body found in the Talladega National Forest last week has been identified as an Anniston man who was reported missing a month earlier.
A couple on a hiking trip made the grisly discovery May 29th when they saw a foot sticking out of the ground along Cheaha Mountain Road.
Talladega County Sheriff Jerry Studdard said the remains were those of 27-year-old Gary Dayle Schlichter. He was reported missing April 29th by relatives. He said the decomposed body had been place in a shallow grave and covered in lime.
Sheriff's Lt. Mike Hubbard said Schlichter died from multiple gunshot wounds, and he said its unclear when the victim was shot and where.
