Houston County commissioners hope to get a 1-cent sales tax extension. The sales tax was implemented in 1989 and expires in 2014.
County commissioners had a long-term plan to cut down overcrowding in the Houston County school system.
If passed, the sales tax extension would expire in 2030.
Houston County Commission Chairman Mark Culver said, “We believe it will pass. That extension is very important to the 2 school systems. Both plan on doing bond issues and need that tax extension to apply for that bond issue. So we feel it will pass in the last 3 days.”
Currently, county school systems collect 30-percent from the education budget.
