UNDATED, Ala. (AP) - Alabama state troopers say at least six people died in roadway accidents over the 78-hour Memorial Day Holiday weekend travel period.
The traffic fatalities included an Ozark teenager who was killed early Monday when the pickup truck he was driving ran off Alabama Highway 103 and struck a tree. Troopers said 18-year-old Wesley Lavon Powell died at the scene. A passenger, 18-year-old Brandon Whitehead, was injured and is listed in stable condition.
Deadly wrecks were also recorded in Perry, Colbert, Sumter, Shelby and Talladega counties.
The Department of Public Safety had estimated 17 deaths on the state's rural highways over the three-day holiday period that ended at midnight Monday.
