Covington County One-Cent Sales Tax Dispute

Talk of a penny hike in the sales tax has stirred controversy in one Wiregrass city.

This week, several community awareness meetings have been held.

School officials say a one-cent increase in the city sales tax is essential in building a new elementary school. Currently, South Highlands Elementary has chronic mold and roof leaks.

One store owner says Opp businesses shouldn't have to squarely be placed with the burden.

"I don't think there's an Opp businessman against more money going to the schools, but putting an additional one cent on us puts us on an unleveled playing field with other communities in the county as taxes go," says David Ellis

There's discussion underway to possibly enact a one-cent sales tax increase across Covington County.

Ellis says that would be a more equitable way to raise revenue for the schools.
