Georgia Power Plant Approval and Dispute

The state of Georgia has approved a proposed coal-fired electrical power plant near Blakely, but opponents plan to go to court to block the project.

A number of public hearings have been held since LS Power began working on plans for the plant 6-years ago.

The plant would generate enough power for a half million homes.

It would also employ more than 100 people and generate millions of dollars in tax revenue.

Georgia's environmental protection division has issued all of the necessary permits for construction to begin.

However opponents are concerned about possible health problems they say could be caused by emissions from the plant.

The first court hearing in what could be a long-running legal battle could be held as early as next month in Atlanta.
