Alabama's Department of Corrections chief says more inmates are entering the system and that has caused chronic statewide prison overcrowding.
DOC Commissioner, Richard Allen, was the guest speaker at the Enterprise Rotary Club.
Presently there are more than 28-thousand state prisoners. The system was built to handle half that number.
Allen says it's caused the state to spend millions of dollars to farm out both male and female inmates to facilities in Louisiana. He says there’s no easy solution.
Allen says his office has worked on removing state inmates from county jails.
