Dothan Woman Convicted in Newborn's Murder Sent to Prison

DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - A Houston County judge denied probation for a 19-year-old Dothan woman who pleaded guilty to dumping her newborn baby in the woods.

At a hearing Monday, Circuit Judge Lawson Little rejected the motion from Shakira Thomas.

Thomas was originally charged with capital murder, but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of murder in March and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Thomas gave birth to a baby girl in the bathroom of her home on July 12th, 2005 and admitted disposing of the infant in a wooded area behind the residence.

Thomas, who had been free on bond, was taken into police custody and awaits transfer to state prison.

I do not understand how could this Judge found this young lady guilty on murder charges. If I do underdstand this case at all. The baby was dead when it was born. The family has had a gag order place on them so therefore they can not talk about the way this system is dealing with their child. I wish that this news station will do some more digging into this matter. Some one in Dothan needs to take a stand on what is right and what is wrong. To many people their in that area has been getting the short end of the stick. Thank You

I think that she should have been given a mental evaluation for her actions, and placed in some type of treatment program maybe she was scared and dident know how to handle the situation, ihave seen many people do much worse things and get lesser time.
