DESTIN, Fla. (AP) - One man drowned in the Gulf of Mexico and four others were rescued off a Destin beach after their rented kayak got away from them.
The drowning victim's identity was not released, but a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission spokesman said the man was in the Army and was scheduled to be deployed to Iraq within days.
Beach safety chief Joe D'Agostino says the five men on the kayak were in relatively calm water yesterday, about 40 yards offshore.
When a lifeguard reached the kayak, the men were clinging to it. The drowning victim was already under water and never regained consciousness.
The lifeguard pulled them all to shore with a 10-foot paddle board.
None of the men were wearing lifejackets.
