Ala. Port Authority Announces Switch to Biodiesel Fuels

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Alabama's State Port Authority has announced plans to implement a biodiesel program in an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Director James Lyons, in a statement, said the decision was made after extensive research that included a three-month test program that concluded this month.

Lyon said 125 pieces of equipment used at the cargo facility will burn a B-20 blend of biodiesel, including locomotive engines, cranes and stackers.

Biodiesel is a renewable, clean-burning fuel made from vegetable oils and animal fats. Ethanol and methanol are alcohol-based fuels mixed with standard gasoline to reduce emissions.

Governor Bob Riley announced in January that the state's fleet of vehicles was switching to ethanol.
