rescue and recover
Ten different counties in the Florida Panhandle participated in a domestic drill Wednesday morning.
It was a terrorist attack on Florida, an explosion at the Panama City Port. It wasn't real, just a mock scenario for emergency responders to practice.
Karen Mason, with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said they, “Work together to on mock scenarios to bring together resources.”
The exercise was conducted as close to a real situation as possible.
Even the media had a difficult time getting close to the situation.
“Our goal is to respond and to test our equipment,” Mason said.
In addition to police officers and emergency responders, public information officers were on hand to answer questions and get info to the public.
They even used their new joint information center, which was purchased with homeland security dollars.
“It's important for the public to know where to go,” Mason says.
Officials hope a real terrorist attack never happens in the Panhandle, but after Wednesday’s drill they are ready if the worst happens.
Jackson, Washington, Holmes and Bay Counties were among those in the News 4 viewing area, responding to the mock terrorist drill.
