Santa Rosa Beach Woman Killed in Wreck

A near-head-on collision in the Florida Panhandle killed an elderly woman and sent two other people to hospitals early Wednesday morning.

The wreck happened about 2:30 am near the intersection of Highway 98 and Sandestin Boulevard.

The Florida Highway Patrol says an SUV crossed the center line and slammed into a van.

The driver of the van, 72 year old Roberta Mahaffey of Santa Rosa Beach, was killed.

Her 75 year old husband was critically injured.

19 year old Nicholas Chesser of Destin was driving the SUV.

He was seriously injured.

FHP says the wreck is still under investigation and charges are pending.
